For the fourth painting in my series of landscapes I decided to live cast the whole painting process.
There was a point during the process where I could feel myself falling out of my artistic flow. I didn't like the juxtopisition with some colors I had introduced, like some muted peach tones and vibrant reds. While allowing myself to feel frustrated but not letting it stop my painting process, I had to change brushes. It was the blocky, heavy handed brush that I realized I didn't like; I rely too much on one brush to carry me through the painting process. When I changed up the brush size, I was able to work with the colors I had already laid out. The purple and the orange juxtapose well and I tried to keep that color combination as a main note throughout the whole piece. The indigo I used in the shadows was a more playful color to play off the muted rust colors. The painting itself is a play off of the rolling hills of western France and the hill towns in central Italy. I wanted to explore the rural structures in a colorful landscape and the sunflower fields in Corciano came to mind as I was first exploring the colors. Like with all paintings, I usually don't have a set image when I sit down to paint and I am just creating imagery from what I am experiencing as I create it; as I was painting this I fused the sunflower fields in Italy with the darker and luscious rolling hills of western France.
