Rolling purple fields with luscious green grass under a vibrant blue sky; or so I have been told. I have never been to Scotland but I know I will one day end up painting there and absolutely loving it. I start with simple boxy shapes and heavily saturated colors to begin building a foundation. Although I don't have a clear image of where I want to go with this image, I am immediately pulled into certain angles, marks, and the juxtaposition of colors. I use these momentary insights to create a sense of place, trying to communicate that there is so much more that I can't hardly begin to capture in this small frame. The landscape begins to have a history, and each mark represents a point in time; a flow may have caused erosion in the hillside overtime, creating this shape, color and texture. As the painting develops, a clear palette comes forth with warm oranges complimenting the dark purples. A haze slowly encroaches over the landscape, bringing in the night.
