Started this sketch working through the colors and the landscape sketch. After developing the flat colors and laying out the composition, I found myself imagining the Japanese landscape paintings that Van Gogh saw. When he viewed the silkscreen prints from Japan, it changed how he painted perspective, how he painted with color, and it changed his lines. There was a contour around each tree and rock, giving it depth and character. The colors were flat but expressive, giving form to the shapes and ideas expressed inside. With the simplicity of the silkscreen print, everything has to be composed and organized, so that everything may work in harmony.
