Italian Villa

A quick color study of an Italian landscape from my imagination. I am working on constructing a house right now so it is fitting that there is a house in the painting. ITALYPAINT2In the initial sketch, the yellows and pinks along with the purple and blue shadows are playful and vibrant. The contrast between them is lively and the rest of the paintings architecture and environment should develop around the interplay of these colors. Developing the rest of the structure of the painting with the same colors will also be easier now that it is fleshed out.ITALYPAINT3Altering the brush strokes and weaving the colors together bring a sense of depth. The size of the brush stroke can be used to push a stroke back or pull it forward depending on the size and colors overlapping. A general perspective should be eventually established but right now the artistic decisions shouldn't be affected by the restrictions that a perspective might force.ITALYPAINT4Imagine the landscape beyond the canvas and create intersections of color to divide the space on and off the canvas. The position of a brush stroke in the foreground, middle ground, or background should always be considered. A stroke that falls farther back might be more subdued and smaller, whereas a stroke closer to the viewer would be more vibrant, more defined, and larger.
